McMichael works as an English teacher at Federal Way High School and has worked with Pongo Teen Writing, a Seattle-based nonprofit writing effort with at-risk youth.

How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?

I got my MAT and BA in psychology in creative writing from SPU.

Who made a difference in your SPU education?

During my undergrad, Dr. Doug Thorpe modeled not only how to make connections within a text and throughout history and culture but also how to be a spiritual intellectual Christian deeply concerned and involved with people and current events.

What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?

Life gives us daily tests in loving others, including yourself. You can’t study for these or cheat, but there are retakes.
