SPU Ethics Bowl Team

The SPU Ethics Bowl Team placed fifth in the nation at the National Bioethics Bowl held at the University of Pittsburg in April. This was the team’s first time competing in the annual competition, which brings together undergraduate teams from colleges and universities around the country to debate ethical issues in medicine, biotechnology, and health care. The six-member student team also placed fifth in the northwest region Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl.

“The fact that the students were so competitive and beat some Ivy League schools speaks to their preparation and commitment,” said team coach and Professor of Philosophy Leland Sanders.

Students prepare by studying a set of cases and crafting arguments for their positions, which they present in debate rounds at the bowl. The competition also requires a strong emphasis on acknowledgement and understanding of opposing views.

The members of the team are: Maggie McGowan, Sadie McMillan, Morgan Meraglia, Eva Newkirk, Yvanne Souvenance, and Joelle Walworth.
