In the first year of her master’s program in global human development at Georgetown University, Dooley hopes to focus on refugees and institution-building in the Middle East. With a background in political science, she has spent time in both Turkey and Jordan doing various teaching and internship programs. She is learning Arabic and is involved in both Women in Global Affairs and Middle East clubs, as well as graduate student Christian fellowship.
How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?
At SPU, I was able to study abroad in Jerusalem with the Middle East Studies program, which sparked my love for the region, interfaith dialogue, and Arabic. Overall, SPU encouraged me to get out of the SPU bubble and engage with communities different than myself, from studying abroad to leading Young Life in West Seattle.
Who made a difference in your SPU education?
Dr. Ruth Ediger in the Political Science Department had the greatest impact on me as a student. Her classes were the ones that made me think the most and work the hardest, but were also the ones I got the most out of. I have come back to readings we did in her class numerous times in my professional and graduate career and they have proved valuable in my travels. She holds her students to a high standard and supports them in reaching and exceeding those goals.
What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?
If you can, travel. Post-graduation is one of the few times in your life when you have nothing tying you down, both locationwise and relationshipwise. Teach overseas, volunteer with Peace Corp or a religious volunteer organization, go backpacking, go WOOFING.
