Executive Director of Boys & Girls Club of King County
Sociology major 2008
The executive director for the Kirkland Boys & Girls Club, Heil works with the club advisory board to plan two major fundraising events: Summer Dreams and the Don James Golf Classic. She also prepares and manages the club’s annual budget; leads and manages a team of directors to succeed in their departments; and builds and maintains strong relationships with school principals, community organizations, and businesses. The club serves approximately 2,200 kids annually through drop-in athletics and summer camp programs.
How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?
The club is the second home for these kids and SPU was my second home. It was where I felt safe, shared happy moments with my closest friends, and where we shared tears. I know my professors and all the staff there work so hard to make sure students feel welcomed and loved. Every day, my staff and I try hard to ensure our club kids feel like this building is something so much more. I would like to think that I’m empowering and leading my staff to change the world for our club kids. There isn’t a person in the organization who doesn’t show up wanting the best for every child that walks through our doors.
Who made a difference in your SPU education?
Dr. Jennifer McKinney pushed, encouraged and changed my life the most while at SPU. I absolutely know I would not be the person I am today without her.
What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?
Joseph Campbell said, “We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” Take a deep breath, it will be OK.
