The endowment funds SPU’s Writing Lab, which supports student writing through graduation. “Luke’s colleagues and former students have given so generously because they recognize him as a master teacher who was passionate about good writing,” says Professor of English Mark Walhout, the department chair. “He spent countless hours working with individual students on their papers.”

Reinsma taught at SPU for nearly 30 years, serving beyond the classroom as supervisor of the Writing Lab, acting as the language arts advisor, and directing the University Scholars honors program. He took over and expanded the writing program in the 1980s. Currently, all first-year students are required to take two writing courses.
