How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?

SPU created a framework for me to name, approach, and combat systemic issues such as institutional racism and sexism. When I was at SPU, I was given the opportunity to serve as student ambassador to Tent City 3 at SPU (the first time) and that opportunity exposed me to housing and services serving folks who are experiencing homelessness.

Who made a difference in your SPU education?

Dr. Jack Levison, Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil, Dr. Karen Snedker, Dr. Jennifer McKinney, Dr. Margaret Brown, Owen Sallee, Jeff Jordan, Niki Amarantides, Celeste Cranston all made a unique and specific impact in my life (and many I am still connected to). I have many stories of each of these people and how they have impacted my life.

What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?

There is a huge gap between “engaging the culture” and “changing the world.” To be fully invested and to engage well, it takes time. A lot of time. It will not be flawless from the beginning and good things take time. Be open to saying yes to new opportunities, and listen to yourself (not friends or parents or mentors) to find what makes YOU happy and is life giving to you.
